Drip Paintings 2013

 Artwork by J.Paul Jackson

Using latex paints, the artist begins his process by creating long and short drips from containers varying in size. He then pivots the canvas horizontally or vertically or taps the back of it in order to manipulate the paint. Another technique he occasionally employs is spraying water on the paint after it's been applied in order to thin the paint out. This process removes an element of authorship from the artist, and this fascinates Jonathan. On occasion, Jonathan is so fond of the end result, that he attempts to recreate it by repeating the process highlighting how difficult it is to actually do so.

Jonathan's intent is for the audience to become lost in the small dots and overwhelmed by the variation of colors and sizes, suggesting that they were created at a time when he himself felt a lack of control in his surroundings. By using a technique that removed an element of control Jonathan confronts the loss.
